[Pharmacology and Toxicology]
This product is a weak base salt of organic tannic acid derived from the reaction of total alkaloids extracted from the root of the leguminous plant Sophora flavescens with tannins extracted from Gallnut nut. After oral administration, the total alkaloids and tannins of Sophora flavescens are released in the intestines, where they exert their pharmacological activity. The various active ingredients in Sophora flavescens total alkaloids, such as matrine and oxymatrine, have antibacterial properties by increasing white blood cell counts and strengthening the body's immunity. Tannic acid precipitates proteins in the intestinal mucosa, forming a protective layer that reduces irritation, reduces inflammatory exudates, and decreases intestinal motility, resulting in astringent and antidiarrheal effects.
[Pharmacokinetics]
After oral administration, this product breaks down in the intestine into tannic acid and total matrine. Tannic acid is not absorbed and exerts its effects within the intestinal lumen, while total matrine is readily absorbed and distributed extensively in the blood, liver, kidneys, and intestinal wall. Peak blood concentrations are reached approximately 2.5 hours after administration, with a half-life (t½) of 2-3 hours. Excretion occurs in the urine.
