Dextromethorphan hydrobromide is a centrally acting antitussive drug that inhibits the cough center in the medulla oblongata, producing an antitussive effect. Its antitussive effect is equal to or slightly stronger than that of codeine, and long-term use is not associated with dependence or tolerance. Guaifenesin is an expectorant that increases secretion of respiratory glands, thinning sputum and making it easier to expectorate.
