This product is a major alkaloid found in the rhizome of the Ranunculaceae plant Coptis chinensis. It can be extracted from Coptis chinensis, Phellodendron amurense, or Tripterygium wilfordii, or it can be synthesized artificially. This product has only a weak antibacterial effect on bacteria, but is effective against intestinal infections caused by Shigella dysenteriae and Escherichia coli.
