In the highly acidic environment of the gastric parietal cells, it is converted into a sulfenamide derivative that binds to H+-K+-ATPase, inactivating the enzyme and inhibiting centrally and peripherally regulated gastric acid secretion. It also reduces pepsin secretion and activity, and eliminates Helicobacter pylori in the gastric mucosa.
