The guaifenesin ether in this product is an expectorant, increasing respiratory gland secretion, diluting sputum and making it easier to expectorate. Pentoxetine citrate is a centrally and peripherally acting antitussive, with an antitussive effect one-third that of codeine. It also relaxes spasmodic bronchial smooth muscle, reducing airway resistance. Chlorpheniramine maleate is an antihistamine with a central sedative effect. Aluminum hydroxide protects the gastric mucosa.
