[Pharmacology and Toxicology]
This product consists of two molecules of 5-aminosalicylic acid linked by an azo bond. 5-aminosalicylic acid is an active ingredient in the treatment of ulcerative colitis. However, after oral administration, 5-aminosalicylic acid is absorbed in the small intestine and excreted in the urine after acetylation, preventing it from reaching the colon. This product is neither absorbed nor decomposed in the stomach and small intestine. Once in the colon, the azo bond is broken down by bacteria, breaking down into two molecules of 5-aminosalicylic acid. These molecules act on the inflamed colonic mucosa, inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis and the formation of inflammatory mediators such as leukotrienes, reducing intestinal cell membrane permeability, and alleviating intestinal mucosal edema.
