【Ingredients】
This product is a compound preparation. Each capsule contains 100mg of berberine hydrochloride and 50mg of trimethoprim.
【Appearance】
This product is a capsule. The contents are yellow granules, odorless, and bitter in taste.
【Indications】
Gastroenteritis, bacterial dysentery, and other intestinal infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
【Dosage and Administration】
1-3 capsules each time, 3 times a day.
【Adverse Reactions】
Nausea, vomiting, drug rash, and diarrhea may occur, which disappear after discontinuation of the drug. Itching and rash may occur, and occasionally severe exudative erythema multiforme may occur. Aseptic meningitis may occasionally occur, with headache and neck stiffness.
【Contraindications】
1. Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to berberine hydrochloride, trimethoprim, or sulfonamides.
2. This medication is contraindicated in children with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.
3. This medication is contraindicated in newborns and infants under 2 months of age.
【Precautions】
1. This product can cause hemolytic anemia, leading to jaundice.
2. Blood counts should be monitored during treatment. Folic acid deficiency is more likely to occur in patients with long treatment courses, high doses, the elderly, those with malnutrition, or those taking antiepileptic drugs. If there is a significant decrease in white blood cells or platelets in the peripheral blood, the medication should be discontinued.
【Special Populations】
Precautions for children:
1. Berberine hydrochloride can cause hemolytic anemia leading to jaundice; therefore, it is contraindicated in children with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.
2. Trimethoprim in this product may interfere with folic acid metabolism in breastfed infants; this medication is contraindicated in newborns and infants under 2 months of age. Children are in a period of growth and development, and their liver and kidney functions are not yet fully developed; therefore, the dosage should be reduced accordingly.
Precautions during pregnancy and lactation: Because trimethoprim can cross the placental barrier, its blood concentration in fetal circulation and amniotic fluid is close to that in the mother. Therefore, the use of this drug during pregnancy must be carefully weighed against the risks and benefits.
Precautions for the elderly: Elderly patients have reduced resistance and weakened metabolic capacity. Blood tests should be monitored when taking this drug. If severe adverse reactions occur, medication should be discontinued immediately.
【Drug Interactions】
1. The interactions between berberine hydrochloride and other drugs are not yet clear; 2. Trimethoprim; (1) Concomitant use with myelosuppressants increases the chance of leukopenia and thrombocytopenia; (2) Concomitant use with dapsone increases the blood concentration of both drugs. [Pharmacological Action] Berberine hydrochloride and trimethoprim have synergistic antibacterial effects. Berberine hydrochloride inhibits various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in vitro, with particularly strong inhibitory effects against hemolytic streptococci, Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio cholerae, Neisseria meningitidis, Shigella spp., Salmonella typhi, and Corynebacterium diphtheriae. It also has some inhibitory effect on amoebae. Trimethoprim mainly interferes with bacterial folic acid metabolism, selectively inhibiting dihydrofolate reductase and preventing nucleic acid synthesis. Therefore, the combined antibacterial effect of the two drugs is enhanced compared to single-drug use, and the number of drug-resistant strains is reduced.
